Let's Recap . . .

Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret by Judy Blume is a story that brings the crazy, scary and chaotic world of a sixth grade girl and questions about religion, the self and life together into an easily relateable and enjoyable short story.

Margaret Simon is 11 years old when she finds out that her family is moving to a small town in New Jersey, where she has pre-developed fears of making new friends, fitting in at her school and finding happiness like she had in New York City. Once moved in, she quickly meets her neighbor and fellow classmate, Nancy, who becomes her new found girlfriend. After the first day of school, Nancy, along with her friends Gretchen and Janie, invite Margaret to join their secret club after school where they gossip about boys, schoolwork/classmates and the excitement of growing up and becoming a woman.

Throughout the book, Margaret faces many obstacles that are easily relateable amoungst many 11 year old girls including the frustrations of being treated and looked at like a child when she wants so desperately to grow up faster and become a woman, the nervousness around boys in her class and the confusion of not knowing who she is as a person, daughter, friend and student. Margaret is a complex young lady but one who proves throughout the book that as long as we are patient, our lives will eventually become everything that we've wanted them to be.
